Ce long passage précède la conclusion de l’épisode de Śakuntalā (Śakuntalopakhyāna), on l’on découvre un personnage féminin très éloigné de l’archétype qu’on se figure généralement de la femme dans l’Inde ancienne, et très différent de l’héroïne amoureuse, mieux connue en Occident, de la pièce de Kālidāsa. Une introduction situe le passage dans l’épopée et s’efforce, en une brève analyse, de souligner les enjeux de l’épisode et de définir le caractère de la Śakuntalā épique. Le texte est ensuite proposé en Nāgarī puis translittéré en caractères latins avec signes diacritiques ; des notes explicatives, portant sur la grammaire, le lexique et le contexte culturel et idéologique, sont destinées à en permettre une lecture aisée ; une traduction proche du texte vient compléter l’ensemble. The readers will find here, reproduced from the critical edition of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Poona, the entire dialogue opposing Śakuntalā to King Duḥṣanta in chapters 68 and 69 of Mahābhārata’s first book. This long passage precedes the conclusion of the Śakuntalā episode (Śakuntalopakhyāna), that reveals a female character far removed from the archetypal image we generally have of women in ancient India, and very different from the amorous heroine, better known in the West, of Kālidāsa’s play.
