L’interprétation la plus consensuelle de cet hymne y voit un charme d’endormissement. Cette définition convient aussi pour la reprise partielle de cet hymne dans l’Atharvaveda. The watch dog, devoted to the defense of the household, is invoked in a famous and delightful hymn of the R̥gveda (7.55), which has been translated in several anthologies. The speaker of this hymn addresses the dog to stop him from barking and put him to sleep. Then he proceeds to ensure the deep sleep of all inhabitants of the house. The most common interpretation of this poem takes it as a sleeping charm, which holds as well for its partial re‑use in the Atharvaveda. The text of R̥V 7.55 does not contain any major difficulty for a student of Sanskrit. Some specific features of the Vedic language have been recalled by Carmen Spiers in Agastya 1 (2025). After an introduction about the traits of the dog in the R̥V, the plan and purpose of the text are discussed, as well as its metrics.
