Ces deux personnages sont liés par une relation de fraternité, puisque l’un et l’autre sont fils de Vāyu, le dieu du vent, et il existe entre eux une affinité naturelle qui tient au fait que Bhīma, qui représente, dans la perspective de la trifonctinnalité mise en évidence par georges Dumézil, le versant brutal et emporté du guerrier, possède déjà en lui une certaine animalité : Hanumān est, au fond, le double animal du héros. Leur commune animalité se traduit par le bruit que l’un et l’autre produisent, en particulier par leur cri, qui est à la fois un cri animal, auquel répondent en écho les animaux sauvages de la forêt, et un cri guerrier destiné à terroriser les ennemis. Au terme du long échange de propos qu’ont les deux personnages, au cours duquel Hanumān délivre à son frère cadet une leçon sur le dharma et se révèle à lui sous la forme gigantesque qui était la sienne lorsqu’il était l’allié de Rāma, Bhīma reçoit une faveur : prenant place sur la bannière d’Arjuna, le singe répondra au cri de Bhīma par son propre cri, amplifié, qui sèmera l’effroi parmi leurs adversaires. Il faut donc penser la relation de Bhīma et de Hanumān dans le contexte de la complémentarité hiérarchisée qui unit le premier à Arjuna, le guerrier sage et réfléchi, traduction épique de la complémentarité entre les deux versants du guerrier. En s’assurant l’alliance du singe, au terme d’un épisode qui revêt un caractère initiatique comparable à ceux qu’Arjuna a lui‑même connus, mais qui lui ont permis d’acquérir des armes de nature magico-religieuse, Bhīma dote celui‑ci de la dimension animale qui lui faisait défaut, et qui constitue une composante consubstancielle de la martialité. The meeting of Bhīma and Hanumān, in the third book of the Mahābhārata (chapters 146‑150), is that of a human warrior with an animal. Both characters are bound by their brotherhood, since both are the sons of Vāyu, the Wind god, and they share a natural affinity, due to the fact that Bhīma, who, in the view of the trifunctionality made out by Georges Dumézil, represents the blunt and restless side of the warrior, already possesses in himself a certain amount of animality: basically, Hanumān is nothing but the hero’s animalistic counterpart. The animality they share is reflected in the noise both produce, in particular in their scream, that is at the same time an animal scream, echoed by the wild forest animals, and a warlike shouting intended to scare the enemy. At the end of their lengthy talk, during which Hanumān delivers to his younger brother a lesson on dharma, and exhibits himself in the gigantic size he was endowed with as Rāma’s ally, Bhīma receives a gift: settled on Arjuna’s flag, the ape will echo Bhīma’s scream with his own amplified scream, that will scare the life out of their foes. Consequently, the relation between Bhīma and Hanumān must be interpreted in the context of the hierarchised complementarity that links the former to Arjuna, the wise and thoughtful warrior, and that reflects, in the epic, the complementarity of the warrior’s two sides.
