Puisqu’elle englobe l’ensemble d’un vocabulaire en constitution, elle permet de dégager les grands mouvements du lexique spécialisé. Après un passage en revue des attitudes à l’égard de l’onomasiologie en terminologie et en néologie, l’article présente l’analyse de la description de la fleur et du fruit de l’abricotier dans quatre dictionnaires encyclopédiques du XVIIIe siècle, qui fait ressortir, au-delà de la néologie, l’émergence d’une langue de spécialité scientifique. Onomasiology is an appropriate methodology for discovering and analysing historical scientific and technical neology. Since it encompasses the whole of a changing vocabulary, it brings out the overall tendencies of lexical change. Firstly, attitudes toward onomasiology in terminology and neology are reviewed, before proceeding to an analysis of the description of the apricot tree in four French encyclopaedic dictionaries of the eighteenth century.
