Si, sous la plume de Balzac, la figure de la lectrice demeure un personnage paradoxal, à la fois tributaire d’une vision stéréotypique des compétences lectorales féminines au début du xixe siècle, mais aussi principale destinataire du texte romanesque, c’est parce que, derrière ce personnage dévalorisé, se construit un discours adressé par le narrateur à un narrataire dont le genre est trouble, à la fois féminin et masculin, réalisant le rêve d’une lecture androgyne opérée par un lectorat bi-genré. In Balzac's works, the figure of the female reader remains a complex and paradoxical character, because on the one hand it inherits the stereotypical vision of feminine reading capacities of the early 19th century, but on the other hand, this character also reads novels and letters dedicated to her.
