Parmi les nombreuses imitations de cette tragédie, nous étudions deux pièces méconnues – Agapit de Charles Porée (1710) et Simphorien de Pierre Jean-Baptiste Nougaret (1763) – qui témoignent du dynamisme du théâtre scolaire tout au long du xviiie siècle. Le martyr, dans son intransigeance, sa résistance aux tentations, sa farouche vertu, est présenté comme un modèle à suivre. Les élèves sont invités à choisir leur voie avec la même détermination, pour se donner un destin à la hauteur de leur ambition, au risque de devoir mourir pour leurs idées ou pour leur foi. Pierre Corneille’s Polyeucte paved the way by inaugurating a subtle blend of sentiment, morality, religion and politics.
