L’imagination serait capable d’imprimer à la matière des modifications extérieures et aurait des incidences sur les perceptions et le développement sensoriel du fœtus. Revenant brièvement sur la généalogie et la postérité du topos, cet article se focalise sur les succès et réfutations du paradigme malebranchiste au xviiie siècle, au travers d’un corpus de textes de vulgarisation médicale où les débats opposent les partisans de l’imagination (imaginationistes) pour lesquels l’émotion altère les organes du fœtus et les détracteurs de cette thèse (anti-imaginationistes) qui n’y voient que préjugé. Les systèmes mécanistes avaient en commun de faire l’économie de l’âme pour expliquer la vie. Bien que chaque époque possède son système herméneutique de représentations et que la médecine — étroitement dépendante des conceptions philosophiques et morales de son temps — soit aussi une production culturelle, il n’est pas inintéressant néanmoins de s’interroger sur la fortune d’un motif et l’actualité scientifique de la question. Que perçoit le bébé in utero ? Ressent-il la douleur de sa mère ? Jusqu’où l’imaginaire et le vécu maternel peuvent-ils « marquer » le corps de l’enfant ? Éclairées par les technologies de l’imagerie fonctionnelle, des recherches récentes sur la vie embryonnaire reviennent sur le lien symbiotique des interactions mère-fœtus. Des convergences apparaissent entre ce xviiie siècle et notre xxie siècle. En aucun cas, on a voulu opposer les scientifiques d’aujourd’hui en prise solide avec le réel et leurs prédécesseurs en proie à l’imagination. La science, quelle que soit l’époque, se nourrit toujours d’imaginaire. An error that medicine has long shared is to attribute to a desire or an effect of the mother’s imagination during gestation, the deformities, growths or spots that a child bears at birth. The imagination would be capable of imprinting external modifications on a matter and would have an impact on the perceptions and sensory development of the fetus. Returning briefly to the genealogy and posterity of the topos, this article focuses on the successes and refutations of the Malebranchist paradigm in the 18th century, through a corpus of medical popularization texts where the debates oppose the supporters of the imagination for whom emotion alters the organs of the fetus and the detractors of this thesis who only see it as prejudice. Mechanistic systems had in common that they avoided the soul to explain life. Although each era has its hermeneutic system of representations, and that medicine—closely dependent on the philosophical and moral conceptions of its time—is also a cultural production, it is nevertheless not uninteresting to question on the fortune of a motive and the scientific topicality of the question. What does the baby perceive in utero? Does he feel his mother’s pain? If so, what is the biological impact? To what extent can the maternal imagination and experience mark the child’s body? Informed by functional imaging technologies, recent research returns to the symbiotic link of mother-fetus interactions. Convergences appear between this 18th century and our 21st century. In no case did we want to contrast today’s scientists who are firmly in touch with reality and their predecessors who are prey to imagination. Elles ont permis la conjonction entre sciences cognitives et recherches sur l’imaginaire, entre biologie et culture. Ses travaux ont repensé les images mentales à l’aune de la neurologie. Ils ont envisagé les connectomes de l’imaginaire associés à certains complexes d’images (lévitation, expérience de sortie du corps). Ils ont confronté les apports des neurosciences aux plus anciennes phénoménologies mythologiques, développant une anthropologie neurocognitive transalpine. La recherche de Marie-Agnès Cathiard a ouvert la voie à un statut neural de l’imaginaire, véritable bouleversement épistémologique. Cette entreprise de reconstruction, plus narrative que conceptuelle, permet néanmoins de souligner l’importance de ses travaux pionniers en matière de cartographie corticale. S’inscrivant dans la filiation de Gilbert Durand dont elle corrobore les hypothèses (primauté des images dans les opérations cognitives, enracinement biologique des images), elle a permis de jeter un regard nouveau sur cet héritage et de lui impulser un nouveau souffle. As a tribute to Marie-Agnès Cathiard, this opening text which aims to recount the story of a journey and researcher’s commitment places her work around the major themes that structured it. “From the body of speech to imagined bodies”, its contributions and experimental investigations, attentive to the innovations of neuroscience, have influenced the center’s policy in terms of anthropological research, breaking down innovative avenues, particulary on the imagination of the brain and the amputated body. Her contributions have enabled the conjunction between cognitive sciences and research on the imagination, between biology and culture. Her work has rethought mental images in the light of neurology. They considered the connectomes of the imagination associated with certain image complexes (levitation, alien presence). They compared the contributions of neuroscience to the most ancient mythological phenomenologies, developing a transalpine neurocognitive anthropology. Marie-Agnès’research has opened the way to a neural status of the imagination, a real epistemological upheaval. This reconstruction enterprise, more narrative than conceptual, nevertheless allows us to underline the importance of her pioneering work in cortical mapping. Il figure parmi les notions à la mode. Nous semblons innover « entre ». L’« entre-deux » nous intéresse comme image heuristique. Parce que le lexique est source de questionnement, laboratoire ou observatoire de nos imaginaires, nous proposons ici une exploration lexicale de cet « entre-deux ». Elusive, associated to the instability, but also to multiple relationship and contacts (between two nations, two civilizations, two subjects), the concept of in-between seems to decline any definition built on binary oppositions. This notion is in fashion. It seems that we innovate “between”. The in-between interests us greatly as metaphor and heuristic image. Nous examinons d’abord le contexte général de l’imaginaire avant de détailler les liens ténus qu’il entretient avec la question du corps. Nous mettons ainsi en lumière l’imaginaire du corps et ses enjeux sociétaux, esthétiques et anthropologiques. We aim in this paper to developp an brief epistemological survey about the imagination of the contemporary body and to underline the diversity of questions that are at stake in this issue. We first analyse the general epistemology of cultural imagination in order to detect its tenuous links with the questions raised by the body.
