L’analyse conduit à une nouvelle théorie du symbole conçu comme pouvoir heuristique des images. Reprint of an article by G. Durand originally published in 1963 in the Cahiers internationaux du symbolisme. The author examines three periods of Western culture where the image and imagination were devalued in favor of rational thinking: the Aristotelian conceptualism distorted by medieval averroism, the dogmatism of the western Christian Church opposed to the byzantine icons, the modern scientism derived from the thought of Descartes.
