Pour ce faire, les outils méthodologiques des sciences de l’imaginaire, de la littérature et de la linguistique sont requis. Dans un premier temps, l’article développe l’étude de l’étymologie latine du nom dragon et de ses dérivés, signalant des liens persistants entre l’image de l’animal mythique et celle de certaines plantes. Ensuite, l’article étudie les noms français et botaniques de plantes évoquant l’imaginaire du dragon telles que la serpentaire, Dracunculus vulgaris Schott, l’estragon, Artemisia dracunculus L. et le dragonnier, représentant des arbres du genre des Dracaena Vand. ex L. This article aims to demonstrate how the caracteristics creating the image of the dragon are used for the nomination and the definition of plants. To do so, the methodological tools of the science of the imaginary, of litterature and of linguistic are requirred. At first, the article develops the study of the latine etymology of dragon and its derivations showing the persistent links between the image of dragon and the image of some plants. Au siècle suivant, la plus ancienne chronique polonaise connue contient deux cas de comparaisons d’un protagoniste à un dragon et les cas de représentations de dragons dans les sources numismatiques augmentent. Enfin, au début du xiiie siècle, la première trace de la légende du dragon du Wawel à Cracovie apparaît dans la Chronique des Polonais de Vincent Kadłubek. The first appearance of the dragon in the Polish historical sources is rather precocious, since the motive of the fight against a dragon can be seen on a coin as soon as the second half of the 11th century, that is to say only a few decades after the realization of the oldest numismatic and textual sources of this country. This paper discusses the origin of the word dragon, outlines the geography of dragon myths, and reviews different functions of the dragon—some provide rain, others provide heroes with the means to performe an initiatory feat. We revisit the dragon murders and winter solstice rituals, and we expand the record.
