Plus précisément, nous montrerons comment le texte littéraire préfigure les enjeux que nos technologies les plus convoitées, attendues et fantasmées pourront avoir sur l’humain de demain. Le roman d’Olga Ravn, Les employés (2018), sera le terrain d’analyse pour étudier de quelle manière le corps augmenté, la vie extraterrestre et l’intelligence artificielle impactent le corps, et par le fait même bouleversent l’entendement de notre propre personne et du monde qui nous entoure. Ainsi, nous verrons qu’un avenir où il est davantage question de progrès technique que social peut engendrer une réalité désincarnée et surtout une humanité aliénée. Through the epistemic potential of speculative science fiction, this article offers a reflection on the impacts of technologies on the human body. More precisely, this article illuminates how literary texts anticipate the challenges which will arise in relation with the body of the future from our most awaited and fantasized technologies. Olga Ravn’s novel, The employees (2018), will be the basis of this article’s inquiry into how the augmented body, extraterrestrial life and artificial intelligence impact the body and, by the same token, upset our own understanding of ourselves and the world which surrounds us. La science et les arts s’inspirent mutuellement lorsqu’elles dialoguent au sujet des nouvelles possibilités offertes par la chimie, la génétique, les appareillages, les cybertechnologies (I.A.), les acquis scientifiques en matière de transsexualité, les développements de l’imagerie numérique et des expériences virtuelles immersives en 3D, ou encore par les spéculations sur le potentiel des thérapies dite quantiques, dont se moquent la plupart des scientifiques — tandis que d’autres voies thérapeutiques fondées sur l’usage de certaines fréquences sont frayées par les neurosciences. Certaines performances sont de véritables expériences médicales qui font du corps étrangement métamorphosé un objet d’art, un autre, mutant. Les récentes découvertes décuplent les capacités ordinaires en posant parfois le problème de l’unité de l’esprit et du corps, mise à mal par le devenir cybernétique de l’humain. Les arts se veulent pionniers face à de telles questions, à l’image de la science-fiction spéculative qui tente d’anticiper sur les risques créés par ces innovations. Beyond simple verbal or technical strategies aimed at extending man’s physical capacities and range of action, our modern times provide unusual means of emancipating ourselves from the limitations and imperfections of the body. Science and the arts inspire each other when they discuss the new possibilities offered by chemistry, genetics, devices, cybertechnologies (A.I.), scientific achievements in the field of transsexuality, developments in digital imaging and immersive 3D virtual experiences, and speculation on the potential of so‑called quantum therapies, which most scientists scoff at—while other therapeutic avenues based on the use of certain frequencies are being opened up by neuroscience. Some performances are veritable medical experiments, turning the strangely metamorphosed body into an object of art, another mutant. Recent discoveries are multiplying ordinary capacities tenfold, sometimes raising the question of the unity of mind and body, undermined by the cybernetic development of the human being.
