This article examines the role of the first assistant director in Tunisian filmmaking through the career of Mounir Baaziz, considered a leading figure in the profession. A key collaborator for generations of Tunisian filmmakers and numerous international productions shot in Tunisia, Baaziz worked on dozens of films between 1980 and 2014. His career highlights a fundamental paradox: while the first assistant director plays a decisive role in the organization, coordination, and artistic support of a shoot, their work remains largely invisible and under-recognized. Based on in-depth interviews, archival research, and a life-history narrative, this study adopts an anthropological and sociological approach to film professions. It analyzes the first assistant director’s professional practices, their role in film preparation, relationships of power within film crews, and the transformation of the Tunisian film industry. The study reveals that the first assistant director acts as a mediator between artistic imperatives and production constraints, while also contending with the precarious status of technicians, a lack of institutional recognition. He is also subjected to shifts in production models—most notably the rise of the director-producer. Through the case of Mounir Baaziz, the article contributes to the social history of film professions in Tunisia and helps bring recognition to an essential figure who has long remained in the shadows.
