This article explores the socio-professional status of film technicians in Lebanon, a group that has remained largely overlooked in academic research. Combining a historical overview with a 2023 survey of twenty professionals, the study traces the sector's evolution from the golden age of the 1960s and the resurgence in the 2000s to the multifaceted crisis that began in 2019. The analysis highlights a structural state of precarity, exacerbated by economic instability and the lack of an institutional framework or social safety net (notably the absence of “intermittent” status). It also examines gender dynamics, revealing a strong female presence across all technical roles despite lingering stereotypes. Finally, the article underscores the emergence of informal solidarity networks as a grassroots response to the absence of state support.

‘Bump them up! Just give them a chance!’ Gender, Ethos and Collective Filmmaking in South Africa

This article is the outcome of the exploratory phase of a research project on collective filmmaking in South Africa that focuses on the lived experience of workers in the audiovisual industry. The first part offers a brief overview of South African colonial history and multilingual culture, of early film exhibition and production in South Africa, of the development of the Afrikaans film industry under apartheid and of its institutional transformation in the post-apartheid period, highlighting how social and political factors shape the industry's evolution. The second and third parts, dedicated to a survey conducted by the researchers, highlight the particular circumstances of a first generation of entrepreneurs who founded the post-1944 South African film industry. We then delve into an analysis of 25 interviews conducted in late 2021 and early 2022 with workers in the industry, that covered film culture and training, career paths and lived experiences on sets. We explore the transformation of the industry, most notably the interviewees’ ongoing commitment to make the sets a more integrated (yet non-unionized) workforce that is still subjected to very harsh working conditions. In the absence of sustained institutional support, we examine female workers’ agency and capacity to organize in countering the effects of misogyny and racism and in the promotion of both female and Black technicians, reflecting ongoing efforts for representation and equality.

Classifying games in definitive genre categories (adventure, action, etc.) is a phenomenon that is always destined to fail, due to how much these designations vary through time and according to the person talking. Genres are destined to stay contextual, and their relevance to be questioned. In the case of the study of the history of pornographic video games on 80s microcomputers (Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum), it is useful to gather under the designation of “small games” all of the titles with a (very) short play time and for which the gameplay and theme evoke either several genres or no pre-established genre of game. We will see that small games are a commentary on the modes of creation of video games and allow to express messages that would be lost in any other scale. This persistent form throughout history allows to highlight game experiences that are shorter, less technical and less energy consuming that mainstream titles, as well as games often created by a single person rather than by a development studio team.

This contribution focuses on the essay Papà, mamma e gender (2015) / Papa, maman, le genre et moi (2017) by philosopher and writer Michela Marzano. First published in Italy, then two years later in France, this work is an example of undeclared self-translation. I analyze the change of publication context and the differences in the paratext of the two works; then, I study the changes between the two versions and finally I show how, through self-translation, Marzano strengthens her presence as a bilingual author in the Italian and French literary and intellectual fields.
