In the communities of this indigenous municipality of Chiapas, local governments are composed exclusively of married men elected by other married men. While it is accepted that boys migrate to the city as part of their socialization into the exercise of this power, the sedentariness of "unmarried young girls" (ach'ix) is upheld as a condition for maintaining collective identity. Migration to the country's capital, in particular, triggers one of the harshest sanctions that can be imposed at the community level: exclusion.
