Il visait plusieurs objectifs scientifiques et politiques. Le savant se prête à un élégant éloge des travaux de ses collègues. Pour les compléter, il souligne l’influence du slavon sur le tchèque et le slovaque littéraires et cite un verset biblique en vieux thèque rapporté par un talmudiste français du XIIe siècle. Face à la menace allemande, Jakobson appelle à l’union des efforts des linguistes tchèques et slovaques. La publication, en annexe, du texte russe inédit permet d’apprécier le style de Jakobson, de prendre connaissance de ses inscriptions marginales et de comparer l’original à la traduction, vraisemblablement réalisée par Jules Legras.
