Expérimentale, cette construction républicaine fut complexe tant en raison des divergences conceptuelles, voire partisanes, sur un régime républicain idéal que du contexte politique, économique et militaire dans lequel elle est advenue. La conjonction du moment commémoratif du Bicentenaire de la Révolution française, du tournant biographique et du retour en force de l’histoire politique a favorisé un renouveau historiographique autour des architectes de cette République, les conventionnels, et des conditions de son élaboration. The First Republic is historically indivisible from the National Convention, the third legislative assembly of the French Revolution, which gave it a political and legal existence the day after the abolition of royalty. This experimental republican construction was complex both because of the conceptual and even partisan divergences of an ideal republican regime and because of the political, economic and military context in which it took place.
