I study the two brief descriptions of Elizabeth and compare them to extracts from other contemporary novels in order to understand how femininity is grounded in the dangerous concept of transparency, which I connect to the opacity of the monster’s physical appearance. It seems to me that while the novel rigorously demonstrates the flaws inherent in Victor’s epistemological model, it nevertheless fails to escape its attraction entirely. Cet article poursuit l’analyse de la « transparence » du personnage d’Elizabeth Lavenza à partir de l’édition de 1818 de Frankenstein pour étudier l’influence que la physiognomonie et les théories de Lavater en particulier exercent sur Victor mais aussi sur le roman dans son ensemble. J’y examine les descriptions d’Elizabeth et les compare à des extraits d’autres romans contemporains de Frankenstein pour essayer de dégager une représentation de la féminité à partir du dangereux concept de transparence, représentation que je lie à l’opacité de l’apparence du monstre.
