Il s’agit d’abord de les identifier, grâce à History of a Six Weeks’ Tour (1817) notamment, afin de déterminer si ces allusions transesthétiques sont fictives ou réelles. Il s’agit ensuite de montrer que Mary Shelley redynamise le genre gothique, en allant au‑delà du pittoresque et du sublime. En isolant quelques motifs « architecturaux », l’auteure structure sa narration et développe le symbolisme de son œuvre, dont il est possible de déceler plusieurs niveaux de lecture. Il en ressort une œuvre particulièrement bien pensée, construite et architecturée. Instead of full architectural ekphrases, Frankenstein (1818) shows several “architectural places”, namely cities, cottages, and churches and castles. This paper tries to identify them, especially thanks to History of a Six Weeks’ Tour (1817), first to see whether those transaesthetic allusions are fictional or real. The analysis shows that Mary Shelley regenerates the Gothic tradition, by transcending the picturesque and the sublime. Indeed, through the selection of a few “architectural” motifs, the author structures her narrative and develops the symbolism of her novel, while several layers of meaning can be found.
