The works of various writers are examined, such as Kafka, Philip Roth and Adam Thirlwell, for whom the process of fiction writing and reception challenge the notion of originality. Thus, the relationship between authors and literary traditions is investigated in order to emphasise the pivotal role played by the act of reading. As such, reading appears to be the cornerstone of literary creation, understood both as a guide for continuity and a driving impetus for appropriation and reivention. By focusing on reading as an integral part to the act of writing, we elaborate on the idea that the evolution of the novel as a form illustrates the mutability of its history and highlights the liberty for any author to reinvent past forms. « The Singularity of Reading » examine les problématiques de créativité et d’influence dans l’art du roman. Les œuvres de plusieurs auteurs sont abordées, notamment Kafka, Philip Roth et Adam Thirlwell, chez qui le processus d’écriture de fiction et de réception mettent à l’épreuve la notion d’originalité. De la sorte, la relation entre auteurs et traditions littéraires est analysée afin de mettre en avant le rôle clé joué par l’acte de lire. De la sorte, la lecture apparaît comme la pierre d’angle de la création littéraire, à la fois comme garant de continuité et d’innovation, en tant que source d’appropriations et de réinventions. Le but de cet article est de montrer ce que Frankenstein doit également au roman sensible du xviiie siècle dont Mary Shelley fut à certains égards une lectrice passionnée.Il s’agira de montrer à quel point l’esthétique du roman sensible innerve la représentation du corps, de l’émotion et du désir masculin dans Frankenstein, mais aussi la relation problématique que ce roman entretient avec la finalité morale que le roman sensible se propose d’atteindre. Une telle mise en perspective de représentations romanesques qui se suivent dans le temps de la littérature permettra, finalement, d’appréhender le glissement de la représentation du héros sensible vers un héros qui sera désormais romantique. Even if it ultimately brims over generic categories, Frankenstein is often presented as a Gothic novel, a philosophical tale or even as the first science‑fiction novel. This article aims at tracing the influence of the eighteenth-century novel of sensibility—which Mary Shelley read passionately—on Frankenstein.I will show how representations of the body, emotions, and masculine desire are innervated with the aesthetic codes developed in the novel of sensibility in Frankenstein, but also how complex the relation this novel has with the moral purpose lying at the core of the novel of sensibility actually is.
