This article explores the continuing pertinence of Arthur Schlesinger Jr.’s famous Imperial Presidency idea, first expressed in a book published in the midst of the Watergate in 1973. After a review of that classic work, the article shows how the Bush presidency received massive new powers by Congress after the shock of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The “War on Terror” led to many abuses, but it took years to whistleblowers and investigative journalists to shed light on these issues.
