Écrit entre 1603 et 1606 par William Shakespeare, Le Roi Lear n’a cessé de susciter l’intérêt des grands metteurs en scène des XXe et XXIe siècles, mais d’autres domaines artistiques ou littéraires s’en sont également emparés que ce soit à l’opéra, chez les peintres, les cinéastes, les poètes ou dans les albums illustrés. Sous ces formes différentes, l’histoire du Roi Lear s’est inévitablement transformée, les particularités stylistiques du script, du scénario ou de la partition mettant en lumière certains aspects de l’intrigue au détriment d’autres, relégués au second plan voire omis. Les choix esthétiques du peintre, du chorégraphe ou du scénographe eux aussi ont orienté le regard de l’observateur et modifié la perspective de l’œuvre. Quels sont ces autres récits ou démarches narratives et quelle mémoire de l’œuvre veulent‑ils transmettre ou transformer ? Comment ces expressions artistiques se superposent‑elles ou dialoguent‑elles à l’intérieur de l’œuvre (intermédialité) et à l’extérieur (pluri‑médialité) de celle‑ci ? Quels liens établissent‑elles avec le public, qu’il soit auditeur, observateur ou lecteur ? Parviennent‑elles effectivement à toucher toutes les générations, toutes les sensibilités ? Enfin, quelles traces laissent‑elles dans l’Histoire, celle de notre temps ? Afin de croiser nos réponses à ces questions, ce numéro de Représentations dans le monde anglophone rassemble les travaux issus de divers domaines littéraires et artistiques par lesquels les auteurs interrogent la place qu’occupe le Roi Lear aujourd’hui encore dans le champ de leur recherche. Roi Lear désintégré © Danièle Rivier With the successful production of King Lear directed by Georges Lavaudant that toured France in 2022 (in particular in the MC2, Grenoble), a new opportunity was given to the community of scholars to explore this masterful play as well as its various appropriations in the contemporary cultural landscape. Written between 1603 and 1606 by William Shakespeare, Lear has never stopped arousing the interest of 20th- and 21st-century directors. Yet, artists from other fields have also conveyed its force with different tools, whether in operatic versions, paintings, films, poetry or novels. The aesthetic choices of painters, choreographers and moviemakers have inevitably directed the viewers’ gaze and modified the perspective of the play. What are the narratives conveyed by all these aesthetics and what have the latter kept from or transformed in the play? How do these aesthetics either superimpose each other within the play (intermediality) or communicate among one another outside it (pluri-mediality)? How do they attract the audiences (readers, scholars, auditors)? Can they really fascinate all the generations and address all the sensitivities? Finally, what traces have they left behind them in history? In order to answer those questions, the present issue of Représentations dans le monde Anglophone gathers the works of authors from the fields of Literature, Arts and Languages to assess the central position of King Lear in research. The contributions in this volume were initially presented as papers during the annual conference organised by the Société d’Activités et de Recherches sur les mondes Indiens on the theme Ecofeminism in India: History, Struggles, and Perspectives on the 28th and 29th May 2021. The articles are anchored in sociological and anthropological fieldwork, literature, and poetry. They contribute through their different perspectives towards environmental history, past and present conceptions of nature and women, while revealing some of the pioneers in the struggle for the preservation of natural resources and famous events connected with ecofeminism. This tree is often a central element depicted in Warli paintings, a ritualistic art of the Warli tribe of northern Maharashtra in India. Given the destruction of forest cover that is being witnessed in the 21st century, and for this volume on Ecofeminism in India, it seemed an appropriate reminder of the soothing presence of trees, which are the very important life providers and sustainers of ecosystems across the world. It also hails the Chipko Movement, one of the emblematic moments of women’s resistance against the felling of trees. On behalf of the SARI, we thank Jamie Alexander, who designed this front cover. Theoreticians, literary critics, a philosopher and an artist joined forces, not in the aim of bringing down the diversity of approaches and definitions to a consistent unity but on the contrary, to illustrate the limitless field of possibilities opened out by the conjunction of the two terms. En l’absence de révélations inédites, que dire qui n’aurait pas déjà fait l’objet d’une étude universitaire, d’un documentaire ou déjà été rapporté dans une fiction ? Quelle connaissance nouvelle pourrait bien être encore construite sur le 11 Septembre — vingt ans après ? Telle est précisément la question que les chercheur·e·s convié·e·s à une journée d’étude organisée le 26 mars 2021 à l’université Paul Valéry Montpellier 3 se sont appliqué·e·s à explorer depuis différents prismes disciplinaires. Les chercheuses et chercheurs ayant contribué à ce numéro ont analysé l’onde de choc du 11 Septembre dans des domaines aussi divers que le renseignement, le sport, la poésie ou encore les représentations audiovisuelles, tant sur petit que sur grand écran. Une première partie est consacrée aux retombées politiques des attentats, qui ont conduit à une restructuration de la communauté du renseignement, mais également à la redéfinition de la notion de « patriotisme » par l’administration Bush. La deuxième partie de ce volume explore les tentatives artistiques de se réapproprier les attentats mais également leurs suites controversées, la guerre mondiale contre le terrorisme défiant les lois nationales comme internationales, de la surveillance de masse à la guerre « préemptive » ou « préventive », au mépris des conventions de Genève, y compris dans le recours à la torture. Le contexte sanitaire, associé à un contexte social sous tension, a rebattu les cartes du paysage politique américain, replaçant le candidat Joe Biden au centre du jeu du Parti démocrate, et fragilisant un président sortant traditionnellement favori des sondages pour briguer un second mandat. Partant de ce constat, le présent numéro s’intéresse aux différentes étapes de la campagne de 2020, en analysant le rôle des primaires au sein du Parti démocrate et les tensions idéologiques qui ont animé ce dernier. Il propose également un bilan de la présidence Trump sous l’angle institutionnel et met en avant certaines des thématiques importantes abordées dans des États-clés, pour mieux illustrer les enjeux qui ont permis de déterminer, en partie, le résultat de l’élection. In Early-modern times, sea lanes represented voyages, escapes, explorations and conquests. They were a means to protect oneself from the enemy and a source of pride (remember Elizabeth’s victory over the Invincible Armada). In the poet’s canon, the sea conveys a vast palette of images and emotions such as dilemmas, loss, love, battles, success and fate. It also provides the script with a rhythmic pattern possibly reflecting the ebb and flow of waves on the shores. The sea can be on- and off-stage; it is a structuring device often used for characterization; it can also embody human qualities—like ambition and force—and, last but not least, it is the emblem of Shakespeare’s unfathomable imagination. In his final romance, The Tempest, which is central in this volume, the sea becomes a climactic symbol of regeneration: it “permeates the essence of the play […], and leaves the characters and audience convinced that ‘though the seas threaten, they are merciful’”, to quote Tony Jason Stafford in Shakespeare's Use of the Sea, 1996 (3–4). In this play, the sea translates the author’s mature art and his elaborate vision of a world that has changed and which the theatrical space can hardly encompass. Elle était consacrée à « Place and Post‑Truth », ce dernier terme étant né après le Brexit et la première élection de Trump comme président des États‑Unis. L’importance de la « post‑vérité » et de la perte de foi dans les formes traditionnelles de vérité sont des caractéristiques propres aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Les chapitres de ce volet témoignent du besoin de faire la paix avec la vérité en révélant les mensonges du passé et l’impact de la propagande et la nécessité de se reconnecter à la vérité qu’impliquent l’ancrage et l’affiliation à une terre, un lieu, un positionnement social et politique. Quant au second volet, il comprend cinq chapitres qui traitent de l’œuvre de Léonie Villard dans le cadre de la valorisation du fonds Léonie Villard conservé à l’Université Grenoble Alpes, à la bibliothèque SoCLE, correspondant à l’UFR du même nom et regroupant des enseignant·e·s et des chercheur·e·s autour des études aréales, portant sur les sociétés, cultures et langues étrangères. Cet ensemble d’articles permet de découvrir un portrait de Léonie Villard, brillante chercheuse et auteure, et de l’héritage qu’elle a légué. The first part of the volume has been conceived after the one‑day conference on “Place and Post‑Truth” that took place at Grenoble Alpes University in 2021. The topicality of post‑truth and the loss of faith in traditional forms of truth is a widely recognised characteristic of the early 21st century after the Brexit and Trump’s first election as the US president. The analyses of this first part show the need to make peace with truth in recognising lies, mendacity and propaganda and reconnecting with the truth of place and positionality. The second part of this volume deals with the collection “Léonie Villard” that has long been kept at the University within the library named SoCLE—like the department it belongs to— including teachers and researchers working in regional, societal, cultural, and linguistic studies. As Shameem Black notes in Fiction Across Borders: Imagining the Lives of Others in Late Twentieth-Century Novels, “because fiction conventionally calls attention to the texture of experiential life through emplotted action, the novel almost always participates in one form or another of social border crossing” (8). The articles that follow discuss the ways in which geographical border crossings and social border crossings are enmeshed, and how this entanglement is represented in various discourses and in literature and the arts. In this volume, “ethics” is understood in the way Shameem Black defines it, as “the ethos of responsibility to one’s object of inquiry, responsibility opposed to hegemonic domination and representational violence” (3). Il souhaite également rendre hommage à la créatrice de Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, pour sa poésie, sa fougue et son génie révolutionnaire ; un « génie féminin », celui de la créativité, qui a su se positionner, avec la force et l’intelligence de la passion — l’art du gusto, dirait Hazlitt —, dans un siècle en pleine mutation. Depuis toujours, Mary Shelley est une Prométhéenne décomplexée, une survivante qui se régénère au fil des années et qui, déjà en 1816, avait su faire face à la catastrophe et au mauvais temps avec une posture de géante. Reading—writers’ initial link with literature—offers material for writing, while fashioning writers’ conceptions of literature, as well as their vision of their own work in relation to tradition. This volume explores various forms of textual influence as manifested in the works of 20th and 21st centuries authors, to both trace continuities and assess said authors’ “singularity”, in Derek Attridge’s terms. The papers gathered in this volume analyse a large variety of forms of influence, be they visible in the chosen topics or objects, in style, manner, or language itself—turns of speech, recurring motifs, or rhythmic patterns. La journée d’étude s’est concentrée sur le concept de résurgence en tant que phénomène artistique et herméneutique qui fait que certains textes font ressortir ou remonter à la surface des dynamiques et des positionnements qui étaient déjà là sous une forme « dormante » et qui se voient réactivés à un moment donné dans une épistémè particulière. Ce numéro cherche à étudier les moments de rupture épistémologique où l’invisible devient visible, où le regard va à un moment pouvoir se poser, se focaliser sur ce qui était jusqu’alors fondu dans la masse, invisibilisé ou accessoirisé comme faisant partie du décor. Par ailleurs, nous avons eu l’honneur de recevoir l’auteur américain Eddy L. Harris dont la présentation et une partie de son entretien avec des collègues et des étudiants ont été publiées dans ce numéro. This volume is the result of the one-day conference organized by the LISCA research group at Université Grenoble Alpes in November 2024. The conference focused on the concept of resurgence as the artistic and hermeneutic phenomenon that enables texts to make certain forces and positions stand out or rise to the surface. This volume seeks to explore moments of epistemological break when the invisible becomes visible, when one’s gaze can settle and concentrate on what was, until then, lost in the background, made invisible or objectified as part of the landscape. In addition, American author Eddy L.
