C’est ce travail de recherche qu’il s’agit ici de redécouvrir dans ses différentes dimensions, en gardant bien à l’esprit le contexte singulier de l’époque où il fut rédigé : ainsi, comment Léonie Villard justifie‑t‑elle son choix d’une romancière britannique presque inconnue en France en 1915 ? Que révèle sa bibliographie au sujet de la réception de l’œuvre austenienne en France, en Grande‑Bretagne et aux États‑Unis, tant par le grand public que le milieu universitaire et la critique, entre 1811 et 1913 ? Peut‑on considérer qu’il s’agit là de la première thèse de doctorat soutenue sur Jane Austen dans le monde ? Si l’objectif, modestement énoncé dans la préface, était de ne proposer qu’une « nouvelle biographie de la romancière », cette thèse remarquable par son érudition, innovante par son sujet et étonnante par certaines de ses réflexions va bien au‑delà et prouve que Léonie Villard avait d’emblée compris l’importance que prendrait Jane Austen dans l’histoire littéraire. In 1915, Léonie Villard defended the first doctoral thesis on Jane Austen in France, published under the title Jane Austen, sa vie et son œuvre (1775‑1817). This paper thus seeks to present the various aspects and ideas of this research work, bearing in mind the context of the period in which it was written in order to better comprehend Léonie Villard’s specific approach: how does she justify her choice of a British novelist who was virtually unknown in France in 1915? What does her bibliography reveal about the reception of Austen’s novels in France, Britain, and the United States, by the general public, academics and critics alike, between 1811 and 1913? Can Villard’s work be considered as the first doctoral thesis on Jane Austen in the world? Stressing the ambivalence of what will appear to be an aesthetics of details will eventually lead us to argue that Austen’s writings actually showed striking affinities with the Romantics’.
