Während seiner Reisen stellt Humboldt genaue Messungen und Beobachtungen an, um sie dann in einer übersichtlichen Darstellung zusammenzuführen. Es geht für ihn darum, einen Überblick über die verschiedenen natürlichen Kräfte und ihre Wechselbeziehungen zu geben. Sein prä-ökologisches Verständnis der Natur fordert ein neues Darstellungsmodell, das Humboldt 1807 mit dem Naturgemälde liefert.Um diese Praxis anschaulich zu machen, berichten wir über ein konkretes Beispiel, das Humboldt zu Beginn seiner Amerika-Reise beschäftigt hat: die Abnahme des Wassers im Valencia-See im heutigen Venezuela. Aufgrund von zahlreichen Beobachtungen kommt Humboldt zu dem Schluss, dass die Plantagen an den Ufern des Sees dafür verantwortlich sind. Eine Kritik der menschlichen Handlungsweisen verknüpft sich dann mit der wissenschaftlichen Neutralität. Wir untersuchen, wie wissenschafliche Erklärung und politische Warnung sich hier verbinden. In this contribution, we try to throw light on Alexander von Humboldt’s scientific practice, with the help of a concrete example. During his journeys, Humboldt conducts precise measurements and observations of natural phenomena. He then strived to bring them in a synoptic presentation. What matters for him is to give an overview of the different natural forces and of their interactions. His pre-ecological understanding of nature demands a new device of representation that Humboldt produces in 1807 with the Naturgemälde.In order to show more clearly Humboldt’s scientific practice, we report on a concrete situation, with which he dealt with at the beginning of his journey through the American continent: the decrease of the amount of water in the lake of Valencia, in the actual Venezuela. Relying on many observations, Humboldt comes to the conclusion that the phenomenon is due to human activity: the plantations on the borders of the lake. To the scientific neutrality comes then a critic of the human activities. We inquire then how scientific explanation and political warning are here combined. Nous proposons dans cette contribution d’éclairer la pratique scientifique d’Alexandre von Humboldt (1769-1859) à l’aide d’un exemple concret tiré d’un de ses récits de voyage. Pendant ses voyages, Humboldt procède à des mesures précises des phénomènes naturels qu’il observe, avant de chercher à les rassembler en une présentation synoptique. Il s’agit pour lui de livrer une vue d’ensemble des différentes forces naturelles et de leurs interactions. Sa compréhension pré-écologique de la nature réclame un nouveau mode de représentation, qu’il livre en 1807 avec sa Naturgemälde.Afin de donner un exemple concret de cette pratique, nous nous penchons sur un phénomène qui a occupé Humboldt au début de son voyage en Amérique : la diminution du niveau des eaux dans le lac de Valencia, dans l’actuel Venezuela. À partir de nombreuses observations, il en vient à la conclusion que l’activité humaine est responsable de ce phénomène : les plantations sur les rives du lac perturbent le cycle de l’eau et amenuisent cette ressource. À la neutralité scientifique se joint alors une prise de position critique à l’égard des activités humaines.
