La période de la Révolution française fait de ces femmes en uniforme, cherchant à intervenir dans la sphère publique et politique, des amazones, réveillant un imaginaire qui souligne la transgression de genre, conduisant à leur identification particulière, distincte des autres femmes. À travers l’étude de ce siècle des révolutions, l’article analyse la mythographie des Amazones afin d’observer ses différentes reconfigurations, d’évaluer l’ambivalence de son traitement dans les discours et les images et d’interroger ses potentialités subversives. While the legal, moral and scientific foundations of a new gender distinction were being established in France during the 19th century, relegating women to the domestic and private sphere, repeated insurrectionary events paradoxically saw the emergence of the figure—real or fantasized—of the woman in arms. During the French Revolution, these women in uniform, seeking to intervene in the public and political sphere, became Amazons, awakening an imaginary that emphasizes gender transgression, leading to their particular identification, distinct from other women.
