Tel qu’il se développe à partir du xviiie siècle, l’orchestre symphonique s’offre comme un corps social à part entière. Au xixe siècle, porté par l’audace républicaine, il est érigé comme exemple modèle de la « nation » : les musiciens y travaillent en commun pour la bonne exécution de l’œuvre. Toutefois, ce corps social musicien semble répondre à l’organisation même des signes de la partition. L’existence du chef d’orchestre peut d’ailleurs apparaître comme l’allégorie de cette manière centralisatrice de penser le collectif qui se joue déjà dans la mise en place des signes musicaux. Partant d’une analyse de la verticalité et de l’autorité, cette contribution vise à conscientiser les implicites d’une musique qui suit une organisation très disciplinée et tente de penser une autre manière, pour la musique, de susciter l’organisation d’une communauté. C’est à travers l’opposition entre une organisation verticale et horizontale que peut se penser un nouveau type de « vivre-ensemble ». If there is one model of musical community in learned Western societies, it is the symphony orchestra. As it developed from the 18th century, the symphony orchestra became a social body in its own right. In the 19th century, spurred on by republican audacity, it even became an example for the nation: the musicians worked there together to ensure the proper performance of the work. However, this social body of musicians seems to respond to the organization of the signs in the score. In this respect, the existence of the conductor can be seen as an allegory of this centralizing way of thinking about the collective experience, which is already at play in the setting up of musical signs. Starting from an analysis of verticality and horizontal authority, this contribution aims to raise awareness of the implicit aspects of a music which is highly disciplined and which tries to design another way to organize the community.
